Everett Marina & Howarth Park

Everett Marina Park/Boxcar Park

Sunday is usually the day we go exploring. It seems like an enjoyable way to work our way around this new state of ours in a spontaneous way. We look at our master list and select something we haven’t done before and go see it. Some weeks it is an hour drive, other times just a couple of minutes. No matter what though, it is always a new adventure.

Yesterday, I really wanted to be close to the water. As summer is coming to a close, I am quickly realizing that my days of waterfront with sunshine and a cool breeze are going to be gone for awhile. Since I consider that my ultimate in relaxation, I am working my way through all the waterfront options on our list until the fall officially arrives.

Everett Waterfront Marina and Boxcar park are a double whammy for knocking places off our list. I researched a little bit online about what to expect and was hoping we would be able to find a long walking path along the water. We did find Boxcar park, but it was a bit of a letdown as far as relaxing on the water. It is situated next to the Navy base and on the marina where there are many boats docked. There were some colorful kites being flown and a couple of picnic tables to sit while enjoying the space. We never did find a walking path. What I thought was a path to a shopping and restaurant center was also a let down. There were a couple of restaurants, but no shops to meander through like you would think of as a waterfront hangout. We only stayed in the area for about 30 minutes before moving onto another more promising location.

Howarth Park is where I found this adorable T-Rex at the small playground. There is an overlook of the Sound from this location that is breathtaking. I am always so impressed at how the county has thoughtfully provided benches at overlooks like this one where someone can sit and really take in the beauty around them.

I have always enjoyed playgrounds. Even as an adult I climb on a swing to enjoy the rhythm of flying back and forth. It seems to reset my anxiety and allow me to feel free for a little while. There is a lot of research about play and mental health that shows it helps to relieve stress, improve brain function, stimulate your mind, etc. You can read more about it at Helpguide.org

There is a beach access trail just North of Howarth Park playground (follow the street and see the trailhead at the NW end of the turn in the road.) Carefully make your way down sand covered stairs (wood and metal) where you find yourself on multiple height look out points. This staircase path goes over the train tracks and down onto the sand. If you go to the right on the sand you end up at the off leash dog park.

I love the beach, especially if I can get my feet in the sand or walk through the water looking through tide pools. The feeling of the sand between my toes and the sun warming my face has time slowing down for me. Its a restful, nurturing moment that I take part in every chance that I get.

Anyone who knows me can tell you that a dog park is my idea of a fun time. Howarth Park dog park puts two of my most favorite things together, dogs and beach. There were many people and dogs enjoying the later afternoon sun. It immediately reminded me of how much our dog Rocky loved the water and chasing waves. He would run back and forth trying to bite them while barking excitedly. It was a lot of fun to watch. He would have loved this beach.

Have you ever thought about your dogs mental health? Chewy.com has a great article about how to help boost your fur babies mental health. I was happy to see that activities like dog parks and mentally stimulating activities like the beach are listed as ways to enjoy self care with your pet.
